Gooey Butter Cake is my number one requested cake.

Having grown up baking with my grandmother and mother in our south city neighborhood of St. Louis, as an adult I took to baking and decorating cakes for my kids and friends and family. But Gooey Butter Cake reigned supreme as my most requested cake -- even a Gooey Butter wedding cake.

Gooey Butter Cake is a rich dessert with a buttery crust under a sweet dense cake. It originated in St. Louis in the 1930's, most likely by accident with a cake mix.

Jowin's Kitchen began as a home-based bakery, and in August 2024, we opened our storefront at Parkade Plaza in Columbia, Missouri.

The name Jowin's comes from my mom, whose name was Joan. Her mother pronounced is with two syllables, and we kids would call my mom Jowin in jest. Now that my grandma and mom are both gone, we came to refer to our dear Jowin as a lighthearted way to remember them together.

My mom loved to bake and entertain, so we named our place where we hope you’ll find good food and good company in her honor — Jowin‘s Kitchen.
